Prepping: Getting Started
When you think of a “Prepper” or “Modern Survivalist”, you may be picturing the TV characters featured on shows like “Doomsday Preppers. However, preppers come in many forms. Being a “prepper” simply means that you are prepared should an emergency occur, and that your are striving to be less reliant on outside systems of support.
The end of the world is not the only reason to become a prepper, and becoming a prepper does not mean to have to believe that the world is going to end. It means that you want to be prepared and ready for the ‘if or when’ you or your families are put into any kind of disaster or emergency scenario. Many of the circumstances that would require prepping are much more likely to occur during our everyday lives, such as natural disasters.
Homeland Security, FEMA and the American Red Cross have ALL been advocating home preparedness in more recent years, with programs like the ‘Be Ready’ campaign. They have openly suggested that households prepare from 3 days to 2 weeks.
While starting prepping can seem overwhelming, it is actually quite easy. There are countless resources available, and many people who are prepare may warn you that you are about begin a life-changing journey. This journey will be a continual process of education and give you peace of mind that you have done all you can to prepare your family for any situation.
Contrary to popular belief, you do not need to have massive stockpiles of supplies to be effectively prepared. Your preparation efforts can be as simple or as complex as you would like them to be. Remember, there is no one correct way to be a “prepper”, and each person will prepare in our own way to be successful.
